I ‘ve been thinking about switching to large format for a while, and I’ve finally decided to jump in with both feet. The reason has nothing to do with the sterile debate film vs. digital (I also love digi), but mainly with two things. First – and what initially triggered the idea – is the fact that although I love all type of photography and formats, when it comes to buy a book or go back to check someone’s work, it always happens to be a large format photographer. I’m just naturally prone to the color, texture and details of LF. Anyway, the second and most important reason is merely a matter of workflow. I enjoy editing my work but it often becomes a nightmare when I have hundreds of negatives (let alone thousands of digital files). I often find myself shooting around the same subject over and over, just to get home and find out that the best shoot was the first one. I simply need to be less impulsive shooting-wise. At the price film and developing comes, I’ll have to be very reflexive and paused in my way of working to try to “get it right” the first time. Maybe this way, when I use digi for a certain project, I’ll be a bit more reflexive too.
As far as gear goes, after a bit of research and advising I purchased a second hand Horseman. I imagine the switch is going to take time, be sometimes frustrating and certainly more expensive than digital or medium format, but I’m sure it’ll be challenging and rewarding. Can’t wait to get my hands on that new Horseman…..any advice on where to purchase film and other second hand stuff?
